Dermal fillers - smooth, contour and hydrate your skin

Over time our skin loses moisture and elasticity and our face loses volume, inevitably we will start to see lines, wrinkles and creases developing. Dermal fillers can be used to help to correct this, by restoring the lost volume and smoothing out the smaller lines and wrinkles, improving the texture and appearance of your skin and restoring a more youthful look.

Dermal fillers are perfect for sagging jowls, peri-oral lines, lip volume, cheekfillers, nose to mouth lines, marionette lines, cheek volume and chin sculpting.

Juvederm

Hyaluronic Acid is a sugar that is naturally present in the connective tissue of our skin and along with collagen forms the building blocks of healthy tissues keeping the skin smooth and supple. As we age, the levels in the skin decrease and we lose moisture, creating lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers are an injectable form of bio-degradable Hyaluronic Acid specifically developed for facial contouring. When injected with a very fine needle into a crease line, the gels create volume under the wrinkles, lifting up and smoothing out the lines on the surface of the skin.

Restylane

There are many different types of dermal fillers on the market today but at Dorset House Orthodontics & Facial Aesthetics we only use those that have demonstrated predictable long term results and have a reliable safety record.

Dermal fillers break down naturally over time lasting on average 6-12 months. They can be used alone or as part of a more comprehensive treatment plan alongside botulinum toxin treatment.

FAQs

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are made of various kinds of natural and man-made or synthetic materials that have been developed over the years for injection into the skin, such as hyaluronic acid.

They help to restore our skin and facial contours to their former youthful appearance, as the material is injected into areas where it needs to be plumped up again and made to look firmer, both in terms of filling out wrinkles or revolumising the face as well as addressing ageing hands. Dermal fillers have many applications so it's important to learn about what they can treat.

Dermal fillers come in different thicknesses and in general the thicker the product, the deeper it is injected into the dermal layer of the skin to help plump out medium to deep lines and wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines), fill scars, contour or volumise the cheeks and chin or to augment or reshape lips.

Is treatment uncomfortable?

Treatment with dermal fillers and the levels of pain experienced will depend on the area being treated, the product being used (some contain a local anaesthetic) and any topical numbing creams which may be used during the procedure. Treatment should be relatively  painless or mildly uncomfortable with the nose and lip area being the most sensitive.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects from dermal filler treatments include bruising, swelling, redness, tenderness and slight bleeding at the injection sites, which will disappear either almost immediately or over a 24-48 hour period. Rarely some allergic reactions can occur with dermal filler products.

There are some medical conditions or illnesses and circumstances which mean that dermal filler treatment would not be advised; these are referred to by medical practitioners as contra-indications to dermal filler treatment.

How do they work?

As the skin ages it gradually loses some of its collagen and fat. These are the materials that prevent the skin from becoming saggy. Thus, as we age our skin can become thinner and more wrinkled and lined.

Dermal fillers help to restore our skin to its former youthful appearance. Material is injected into the skin in areas where it needs to be plumped up again and made to look firmer.

Fillers come in different thicknesses so that treatment can be tailored to your needs, but in general, the thicker the product, the deeper it is injected.

Often, if you need to have fillers in the upper part of your face for movement lines associated with expression i.e. crow's feet or forehead lines, it is recommended that fillers are used alongside injections of botulinum toxin.
